A Small Manifesto
Things are complex. Things are interconnected. I named the company “Hipbone” because I have been known to say when discussing an idea that we need to consider consequences because “the hipbone is connected to the...” Real understanding and communication is fragile and elusive - they are dependent on an array of factors that all too often we do not fully understand despite our best efforts. One would think that in this age of globalization this sort of thinking would be second nature to us all. The issue of course is that it is hard. As we move towards specialization to deal with increased technical complexity we lose the generalist’s ability to see the big picture and still do their part.
What we need to do as experience designers, clients, and other partners:
- To create the best experiences we need to do our best to understand the interconnected needs of all the people involved or affected by the project.
- Upper management, fabricators, day to day managers, floor staff, and of course the visitor.
- We need to try and understand the ramifications of our choices as we design, as we create the totality of the experience we are designing.
- We need to understand the diverse types of functionality we need to incorporate into our work (for related thoughts).
- All of this with an eye to speed, practicality, and economics.
